Typically, marketing takes some time to gather up steam (planning, developing a marketing plan/strategy, information development, etc.)
There are a few ways of kick-starting a lead generation program while the "big-picture" campaign develops. I've introduced Google's Pay-per-click program (you can be up and running generating calls within a few days). And telemarketing can always generate interest quickly.
Another way, particularly for home improvement companies (such as roofing, plumbing, HVAC, etc) is through flyer delivery. I group this under "direct mail" but it's really something different. That difference has to do with timeliness (you can't get flyers to residences more quickly, even the next day), flexibility, and cost. The flexibility has to do with the fact that you can change the message and the recipients on the fly.
And it's cost favorable compared to traditional mail. You can deliver a 2-color flyer to a residence for about 25 cents total (printing and delivery). Compare this to a direct mail piece (letter, about 70 cents each), a large postcard (approximately 75 cents for everything), and a small postcard (about 50 cents).
Home improvement companies are generally associated with manufacturers, who tend to offer discounted direct mail pieces, that are branded predominantly with their logo and message. These can be less expensive, but for say, a jumbo postcard (8.5 x 5.5), the price is still around 60 cents per piece total).
